Default Thermostat

Hi,

I have a 95 Integra (B18B engine). I notice that once I am cruising on freeway, the temperature gauge drops all the way, almost hitting 'C'. But when stoping at the traffic light for a little while, it rises back to normal. Would this be the problem on the thermostat? If yes, it is easy to replace it myself? Does anyone have similar problem? Normally, how long does the thermostat last?

i've never heard of that happening on an integra.

although, a friend of mine has a 00 eclipse GT, and his thermostat went bad, and he experienced similar symptoms. The car would take forever to warm up, because the coolant was already flowing as soon as he started the engine.

Happened to me.

Does it take a really freaking long time to warm up to a decent operating temerature? Your teg should have the temp needle somewhere close to the middle within 3 minutes from a cold start.

Thermostats just die every once in a while., and they usually get stuck either open or closed.

On the grad scale of 1=changing a light bulb and 10= rebuilding your own tranny, I'd say it's a three. Not a cakewalk, but if someone knows what they're doing, it shouldn't be difficult at all. Though, for the sake of the fact that coolant will get EVERYWHERE and it is not a job to do by yourself for the first time, you will want to either get a friend who has done it before or take it in. If you want to tackle it yourself, the Helms manual's a good place to start.

I am living in Australia and it is almost winter here. In the morning, if I drive onto highway or freeway, it never gets to the normal temperature. It stays at about 1/4 towards 'C' on the temperature gauge. Heater is working fine. When I turn on the fan to level 1 and the heater lever is in the middle, the temp of the air coming out from the vent is about 35C.

I have the Helms workshop manual. It looks simple in the manual. Maybe like what you said, I should get someone who has done it before and I'll drain the coolant before pulling it apart.

By the way, what sort of temperature rating of the thermostat should I get? The recommendation in the Helms manual is 195F. Which temperature rating is better to the engine?

Just get the stock. They simply work the best for most driving, and you'd only want to get the ones the ones that open up sooner (I think Mugen's opens up at 165F) if you do some REALLY extreme driving

Use Water Wetter with your 50/50 coolant mix if you want better cooling

Its absolute cake. And it sounds like a bad thermostat.

Pop off the housing, replace thermostat, pop housing back on. Piece of cake.

I have a JR (stant) thermostat...no difference. Just get whatever you can find cheapest, whether it be OEM or some cheap thermostat at your local pep boys.
