Default Is Vtec overrated?

I seem to think so, but it's probably because I drive a DOHC non-Vtec LS. I was gonna go LS/VTEC but it is way too much money for that. I'd rather spend that money on boost and building my engine to hold more boost. anyone agree? Twas gonna buy a GSR, but since it was White I did not. So I went with the LS instead.

To my understanding Vtec is a function that activates when the engine reaches a certain RPM by changing the cam lobe to make more efficient power though not extraordinary. Is this true?

any opinions?

In your case I would turbo your car. VTEC is no overrated however. It is truly something to hit VTEC engagement in you car. You really feel the extra power and the car feels like it is blasting off. I love my GSR and am so glad I spent the extra money to get the VTEC version.

you have the perfect ride for a turbo. right now I've got my turbo kit in my civic d16. I've bought a b18b like you have in your integra and I'm getting it ready to put in my civic to run turbo on that.

overboost.com put a drag 3 kit & block guard on your car and it put down 257 horsepower @ 6500 rpm to the wheels! Not to mention over 216 ft-lbs. of torque! 1/4 = 13.28 @ 104.9 mph

turbo that baby and don't worry about the vtec.

turbo > vtec

VTEC is a very impressive piece of technology and does a great job at what it's supposed to do (giving high-end power without compromising low-end drivability).

many, many misinformed persons do play it up for more than it is though... usually riceboys..

here is a dyno plot, kinda hard to read:

Stock LS (b18b)
22deg @ 6000 / 12lbs
t3/t04e 50 trim
Zdyne ECU

287whp/248 wtq
 :yay:

VTEC is in no way over rated, the problem is 90% of people (including Honda onwers) don't even know what VTEC is or really does.

VTEC does ecactly that, it add power over higher rpm ranges......however if you plan on turboing your car, dont worry about the vtec...........It will make no difference, compared to that forced induction blast you will feel.......................

I'm basically going to reiterate what everyone has pretty much said...

a turboed LS will be much faster than the 170hp VTEC engine in the GSR. It's all about preference though. To me, there's nothing like the adrenaline rush when it climbs past 6k RPMs. But turbos are sweet too, and much faster. I just prefer not to mess with the engine too much, especially with the whole warrenty thing.

VTEC is not overrated, it does exactly what it is supposed to do. It's not meant to make a car ridiculously fast, like some disillusioned people may believe...

The only downside to Vtec is having a problem with it, and trying to troubleshoot it yourself. Then it becomes a huge ***** of a whore.
