Default Valve adjustment...

I own a 00' GSR and I'm in need of a valve adjustment. The tapping has gotten pretty loud and noticeable. My question is tho would this reduce horsepower at all? My cars been drivin kinda crappy lately thats why I was wondering.

Thanks much,
Chase

I think out of spec valves would do very little HP-wise. I think they mainly just destroy your MPG, but it could be both I guess.

i've heard that adjusting valve clearance to spec can add 2-3 hp. it definitely sounds better afterwards.

you mean you couldnt loosen the locknut or the adjusting screw? make sure they arent loosened all the way. when you install cams, you have have to loosen the adjusting screw all the way and if you try to loosen it when its already loose, you can damage it. if it is really tight, use a longer ratchet and make sure you tighten it to spec next time, it should only be 18 ft/lbs.

im not sure about this...but i think you are suppose to hold the nut still, while you turn the screw.

do you have that special tool for it?

you have to have the locknut loose and keep a box-end 12mm over it so it wont tighten when you turn the screw. then use the feelers with one hand and adjust the screw with a screwdriver. when you feel some drag but can still move the feeler, hold the screw with the screwdriver while you tighten the locknut with the wrench. the goal is to keep the screw in the position you found, it will try to change when you tighten the nut. after you tighten it, recheck with the feelers. if its still good, tighten the nut to spec, then check with the feelers again. if you dont do a lot of rechecking, you will have wasted your time.
