Default GSR Trans on a Ls

Would it make a noticeable diffference?
enough to merit the cost of the swap?

IMHO...Get an engine swap and the tranny at the same time...

I took my 94 LS in to have some transmission work done. Turned out that the repairs would have been almost as much as a tranny swap. I was talked into a GSR tranny with only 30k miles on it. I also replaced the clutch with a new one.
The first thing I noticed was how much more robust 3rd 4th & 5th gears were due to being geared lower than the LS tranny. After a couple of days of break in I tested it on the way to work. I live on the central coast of California and drive to Vandenberg AFB on the back roads.
Some places get windy and hilly. I noticed that I could pull out of 5th gear on a paticular hill where before it would bog down. On straight roads when I dropped to 4th gear to pass cars it would hit 90 before I knew it when before I would only reach 80 with the same amount of effort at the peddle. I would estimate that with the GSR tranny you could shave 2 or 3 tenths off 1/4 mile times.
The ratios for a LS & GSR are:
LS GSR
1st 3.230 3.230
2nd 1.900 1.900
3rd 1.269 1.360
4th 0.966 1.034
5th 0.714 0.787

just for a point of reference....

an old member of this board had a civic coupe with a bone stock as can be LS engine with a GSR tranny.

as is, he ran dead solid high 14s. (i think it was 14.8 from what i remember)

a GSR tranny swap in my opinion is way better than an intake/header/exhaust combination and costs just about the same as well.

ugh.. i wish i wouldve known where to buy transmissions when i bought mine.. mine sux, 3000rpm at 60 in 5th, 3rd gear is where i start to lose speed gains, typical ls tranny though huhh:
tranny was a turd too, 3rd gear synchro is going out, 2nd is starting, too bad the warranty was only 3 months

can you just buy the gears for the GSR and put them in the non v-tec trany. My car's going to be in the shop in about 3 months until winter's over. I'll have alot of time to rebuild the trany.

You can buy the gears and swap them in, but it be easier and cheaper to get a GSR tranny...cause then you have an LS tranny to sell.

Oh, I guess I should have mentioned that I bought the car with almost completly rounded gears. (got one hell of a deal) So I don't think anyone would want it.

there is no such thing as a gearbox with rounded gears
