Default Crower Cams for GSR

Got a few questions.. here go's

63402A
Stage 2 - Stock idle lobes w/63402 VTEC lobe. Requires 68185 spring unless stock rev limiter. rpm idle to 8250

Just making sure Im reading this correctly. The car should idle the same just has larger VTEC lobes.. so when VTEC engages it should have more ummph. I also will not need to buy new springs unless I change out my stock limiter. Is this correct?

Also, what type of performance should I see? Thanks alot guys!

Here's the problem with having stock primary lobes and larger VTEC lobes. By increasing the lift/duration of the VTEC lobes, you change the RPM range at which they're effective.

With your stock cams, the VTEC switchover is about close to the point where the primary lobes run out of power and the VTEC lobes will make more power. If you just change the VTEC lobes and keep the stock primary lobes and switchover point, there'll be a flat spot in the powerband before the fat part of the VTEC lobes comes on.

On the crower web page they note that one stage up I would need a vtec controller. These only top at around 8250. Im just asking will this be an UPGRADE to my current stock cam setup.. with the so called flatspot? or no? This is... my everyday car. Thats why I was liking the idea of stock idle lobes

At that stage your idle will be stock no matter what. The only benefit to stock idle lobes will be gas mileage.

You have to make a really aggressive primary lobe to mess up the idle with a VTEC cam. If you think about it, the highest RPM they will ever have to make power up to is about 6000 or so and then the VTEC lobes take over.

Basically this flat spot is a symptom of having VTEC lobes that start making power at an RPM higher than the stock 4800 RPM switchover. The motor stumbles a bit before you hit the meat of the VTEC powerband.

If you don't want a really agressive cam I would suggest (in order of increasing price): ITR cams, skunk2 Stage 1, or Toda Spec A. Just be sure to take care of the typical i/h/e first.

So you think Skunk2 stage 1 would work for me. I just dont want to have a raspy heavy idle. But dont get me wrong I want perfomance also. What type of results do the Skunk2's put out?

Thanks again,
Chad

It depends on what other sort of mods you do. Pretty much any VTEC cam won't mess up your idle that bad.

My roommate ran the 402a's in his GSR and LS/Vtec, they are nice cams. Pull hard all the way up to 9500 rpm. However, you can go with just the 63402's, and they have bigger primary lobes as well.

Think Im feeling the Skunk2 Stage 1's. But how necessary are the springs that they recommend? Is that more or less them just trying to get you to buy more product? I see that they state the cams are designed to run off of stock internals.

I'd be reluctant to run totally stock valvetrain. You should be fine with skunk2 Stage 1's if you just replace the inner valvesprings with Portflow ones, which run all of 80 bucks.
