RTV Silicone is a type of silicone rubber made of two-component system (base plus curative; A+B) available in a hardness range of very soft to medium - usually from 15 Shore A to 40 Shore. For installing RTV Silicone in a gasket follow these steps:
a)Clean both sides of the surface area for the gasket. Scrape them with a metal scraper at a 45-degree angle to the surface to remove all old gaskets and gasket sealers.
b) Spray a liberal amount of brake cleaner on both gasket surfaces.
c)Wipe each surface clean with a shop towel, and let it dry completely.
d)Cut the plastic applicator nozzle with scissors at an angle to achieve a 1/8-inch hole in the end.
e)Puncture the seal on the RTV silicon tube with a nail. Screw the nozzle on the tube clockwise until it becomes tight.
f)Place the nozzle on the area for sealant, then squeeze it to apply the sealant around the perimeter of the area.
g)Squeeze the sealant around the interior half of each bolthole.
h)Apply sealant in the same manner to both sides that will mate over the silicon gasket.
i)Place the two parts together, insert the bolts and hand tighten them until excess sealant seeps out of the junction.
j)Let the silicon harden by sitting for two hours, then tighten the bolts completely.
k)Wait 24 hours before using the vehicle or item for the best results in a permanent seal.
