Default Stock trannie failure

Recently my trans started acting up. After driving about 20 miles on an interstate I was at a light and noticed that the clutch travel felt weird. Then it started bucking like I was starting in 3rd. Took the car to the dealer and they told me the synchros are gone. Didn't make any sense since the car shifted fine in the am, to me it sounded like something catastrophically failed. I took it to a trans shop and they said the clutch was beat. When they removed the trans they said parts of the pressure plate fell out. Has anyone ever heard of this before? What could cause this? Back around 60K I did have a leak in the master cylinder which the dealer fixed. Could the hydraulics have failed and caused this? They are putting it back together again, but I just want to make sure it won't happen again. TIA
