Drop the B20B in, it'll give you a little more tourqe and more hp. Try to buy the B20Z though. Yes, les than $1200 is right for a B20.

The car in question is a '92 GSR with a B17A. So no, putting a B20Z in will not increase the power. I would go to a shop and see what they think is wrong with it. If something inside the block is shot, a B18C1 shortblock (just the block, nothing else) will bolt in place of the B17A shortblock and provide a bit more power. If the B17A crank is still in alright shape you can sometimes sell them on thepartstrader.com or eBay for a decent sum because of their rarity.

And then just turn around and buy a b18c1 right?

Because i was wondering how hard do you think it would be to find a b17a1 block ... any ideas, like a % chance?

If the block is in good shape (wont know till i get the shop to open it up) then i may just get them to get the parts and do it from there (REBUILD!!!!), but if its shot ill try to talk to you about getting a b18c1

if you had oil leaking and your #1 is not moving, it could be that you snapped the connecting rod and it shot through the block. i have seen this many times on hydrolocked cars.

well, it's a bare block with main bearing caps.....everything else was sold already....it's good for people that crack their sleves, but can bring over all their old parts like the crank, pistons, rods, etc......Asking $45 for the bare block...
