Do you drive an automatic or a manual? My friend's brakes lasted 140K on her Jeep, she always engine brakes.

You may also want to check your rotors; warped rotors lead to uneven wear on the pads which could cause premature squealing

I'm at 48,000 km. Dealer says I need new pads. Brakes are cheap, tranny's are expensive.

Squealing... try putting that anti-squeal goop on the inboard pads.

learn to downshift correctly and you won't have to replace either for a long, long time.

Downshifting isn't a problem. I'll keep buying brake pads, thanks.
