Well its still getting cleaned through the cat but sucking on an exhaust is still gonna mess you up.

what would happen if you took out the exhaust, left the cat, and put a pipe from the cat back? Would it give any gains? Would it be illegal, here in california?

Well over the 95 db limit...so sound-wise it would be illegal. With the stock cat you should be fine...but you still have a bottleneck there. Replacing your stock cat with any aftermarket cat is illegal in CA (although most of them are smog-legal. Smog = pass, but a cop can still write up a fix-it ticket. doubtful it'll happen though).
