Until 5800rpm I cannot tell a major difference in the engine's pull. There is a noticeable amount of added torque around 3300 or so, but then nothing worth writing about until 5800.

In fact I cannot pull on my brothers 240sx until I get over 5800.

How about this....I was in my friends 98 Type R one day and he floored it. His VTEC kicked in (or at least I heard a VERY noticeable sound chage) at 4800! I thought the R's were set at 5700? btw his car is completely stock except for an AEM CAI and he has been the only owner.

werd.

VTEC happens only once in a single sweep of the rpm's.
the initial sound change that happens in GSR with stock intake manifolds, is the butterflies in the secondary runners opening up. from this extra air, you get the extra sound (and performance)..kinda like getting an aftermarket air filter...slightly more air so when you floor it, it makes more noise.

when VTEC actually "kicks in", is when the pin get pushed and locked in and the cams are now using the VTEC lobe... THAT's when VTEC "kicks in" for lack of better terms.

On my D-series engine, it kicks in at 4650 or so... and instead of the trumpet-like BWAAAAAAAAAH I used to get on my 92 GSR, it's a high-pitched metallic whir. I like it - it's subtle. In fact, I really like the SOHC engine in general - very smooth, and a nice sound. I loved the B-series also... in fact, I think I just love all Honda engines. Has anyone ever heard the 1.5L V12 Honda developed for F1 racing, up around 10-12K rpms? That is a MEAN sound... literally sounds like a human screaming at the top of their lungs. It's amazing - I'll try to find a sound byte somewhere and post it.
