there are OBD-I P72's

The problem I find is that he is using a VAFC and running an OBD-I ECU, he's killing that engine, now I don't think thats quite right to do to a type-R and i'd suggest removal back to stock and a compression test a valid idea at this point.

The car was more than likely horribly cared for by someone who thought they knew what they were doing, and I'm hoping that this poor guy will remedy the situation before there are any real problems

P72's were available in OBD1, OBD2a and OBD2b.

Maybe it is just me, but I don't see the harm in running both a chipped ECU and VAFC assuming the chipped ECU is actually tuned. The VAFC would come in handy to make small adjustments at the track when carrying around a laptop and all the required cables is a PITA.

he said it was "tuned through a VFAC"

sounds a lot like someone hooked up the OBD-I system and p72 then dialed in the difference with a vafc... but it wasn't very descriptive,
