Default Another upgrade thread (sorry)

Hi guys. Sorry for such a cliche thread, but I've got my own questions to ask. Recently I purchased a '94 GSR, and it's got the following upgrades:

Short ram intake(shitty eBay one) with K&N filter*
Magnaflow custom 2.5" exhaust
Type-R Header
Lowered on coilovers
slipstreams

And I think that's it. So what I'm wondering...Would you change anything? Personally, I hate this exhaust. It sounds rice as shit, it sounds like a tip or a fart can so I definitly want to change that. I'm just not sure what. I don't want something incredibly loud either, just a nice low tone. Also, are are ITR headers good / decent / bad? And would anything be worth upgrading to? I mean obviously they're not going to be the best but I'm looking for maximum hp with lowest cost, so I don't want to spend $500 for 3 more horses. Also, how do I go about matching things up like exhaust / intake / header, to get the maximum out of all 3? And lastly, my K&N filter had a dent in the top of it. No clue where it came from it was like that when I bought the car, so I'm wondering should I get a new one, or is it not that big of a deal?

Also, this is a DD, if that changes anything.

Thanks guys.

do you have a resonator on the exhaust? how many? how big? if you dont have one, you can fit a 22'' resonator under there and it'll help with the sound.

is the type r header the usdm cast iron piece or the tubular jdm 4-1? big difference there.

hp for cheap isnt easy when you try to do it NA. every part has to compliment the next. you can do bigger cams, but then you'll need more compression. then you'll want a better header. then a tune. etc.

set a budget, set a power goal. then decide if you're willing to dig into the internals or if you'll be content with bolt on's.

take it to an autocross or driver's clinic and go from there.

I'm definitly ready to do internals, I was going to pick up some skunk stage 2 cams but didn't have money for valves and retainers so had to hold off. Also, how do I tell the difference between the two headers you meantioned? I do want to go turbo, but don't really want to throw a turbo on a relatively stock car and run it at 5 PSI, kind of pointless or no? Honestly, I don't know everything about turbo's so I really do need to do some more information, but do you suggest building the engine then adding a turbo on, or vice versa?

this is a stock usdm itr header

this is the jdm itr header

with bigger cams you'll want to increase compression. the best way to do this is with new pistons. stick with oem pistons unless you want a bigger bore. p30 or jdm p73's work well. stay away from ctr's.

you must decide now whether you're going to turbo or not. you dont want to spend money on parts now that cant be used with a turbo setup later.

assuming the engine is healthy, you can easily make 250-300whp on a stock b18c1 and have it be reliable with good tuning and maintenance.

Ok guys I just realized I have ~ $800-1000 to spend, so give me some pointers to spend my money the best. Thanks

Oh and I do want to go turbo, so I really just want to know is it ok to go turbo now with stock internals or should I build them first?

turbocharging a honda is a serious affair, especially if you're a noob to the mechanical details, so i would stay away until your budget allows for a good build.

just do everything right the first time, and dont cut corners...

I would build it first. If you are going to do something do it right.

It is perfectly safe to turbocharge a completely stock b18c1. As long as the engine is healthy, you can safely produce near 300 hp, to the wheels. If your end power goal is near 400 whp, then I would see the need to rebuild with forged internals. I agree with your logic to an extent, I have a built block and still buying my turbo setup. However, My power goal is 400+.

How many miles are on the car? Personally, I would invest that 1k into a turbo setup. Make sure the first thing you buy is your tunning solution. A good budget setup is any OBD1 ecu, have it socketed, get a conversion harness, and find a tuner confident with crome. You will probably need a few hundred more to complete your setup, but it sounds like you need to do a bit more research before you start getting dirty anyway.

300 Whp can be had for < $1400, do a search for "food2000" and look at what he spent.
