Correct me if I'm wrong, I remember reading that the 5-6k rating gives the best light output and anything higher just increases glare. I can't find a source at the moment...

5-6k is the best, they give the best pure light output. Anything over 6 is to blue=bad for night driving.

The 5k-12k numbers just refer to the "Color temperature" of the light. I'd just invest in a nice set of driving lights.
