Default Problem When V-tec Engages

i've been rebuilding my '97 gsr(from a wreck) and ran into a new problem. i've just about got everything back together and running well...until now. Here's the problem: When v-tec engages (around 57-5900, I'm assuming a little late, b/c it's stock and hasn't ever been tuned...150k miles) the tach needle jumps from 6 to 7000 and kind of bounces around. At the same time the needle jumps the check engine light, on the dash, start surging/flashing. The only reason the CEL is on is, b/c the o2 sensors are not installed. Important fact: the car still pulls hard throughout the entire powerband, so I'm assuming v-tec is still working. The car has been running well for a couple of months, since i put it back together. this just came out of the blue. Any thoughts? Thanks.....

I would install the 02 sensors. They are there to balance things out and makes things run right. See where that puts you.

why are you driving the car with no o2 sensors? and VTEC engages at 4400.

If you honestly want to know about VTEC, try starting your own thread AFTER you do a search.

I believe that your car is running in limp mode due to not having the O2 sensors installed and what you think is VTEC is actually your secondaries opening. Install the O2 sensors, ensure your CEL is off and see what happens.

Thank you to the people that are actually trying to help. Why the rest of u are asking me questions about v-tec, i have no idea???

snoopy: v-tec does NOT engage at 4400, are u serious? maybe if ur
computer is chipped.

dvpgsr: i am going to try to get the o2 sensors back in, but it doesn't make sense that it just now started doing this. i have put on at least 1000 miles since they were uninstalled. yesterday and today, i haven't had this problem. I know the difference between my runners (around 4500-5000) and v-tec(5500-5900). i can really hear the runners open up, but don't hear v-tec as much. but i know if v-tec wasn't working, it wouldn't pull hard all the way to 8200.
