Default Dashboard blower motor question

Last night driving home I lost use of the two lowest speeds on the fan control. Turn it to the bottom two speeds and no go...top two work, but it sounds like a vibration of some kind (kind of bassy and rapid). I was thinking about yanking the blower motor to put in a new one.

Any suggestions on the problem, fix procedures, or other problem it might be?

PS...I'm new here and need all the help I can get.

whenever my blower motor doesn't work, i usually just pound on it really hard with my fist until it turns on. this method is very effective actually. :chuckles:

Okay...so thumping the dashboard didn't help.

Has anyone replaced these things before?

easy fix. it is your "resistor block" block of two(?) resistors behind the glove box that control the current for each setting. each setting uses a different combo of the resistors to set the current. lose one of the resistors and some of the speeds won't work. It is a little box about 2" across with a big 4 or 5 wire plug going into it. Unplug and if your fan no longer works at all, you have found it. Your blower motor should be fine. Not really sure where the best place to get a new one would be.

edit* just noticed you got a 91 and everything i was said was for a 94+, should be a similar layout though.

I didn't thump on the dashboard. I turned the HVAC controls on so that the motor would run and then thumped on the blower motor itself, underneath the dash on the passenger side. Has worked for me for the past year or so.

EDIT: since you said you still have 2 speeds on your motor that work, this method probably wouldn't be very effective.
