Let's blindly set the timing after completely removing the distributor and installing a new one. Brilliant. I would never mess with the timing/distributor without a light...it's asking for trouble.

Ghetto mechaninics at it's best! I can fix an exhaust leak with duct tape! Get real if anything is worth doing, do it right! Use a timing light!

how is not using a timing light not doing it right? i have had no problems with all three distrubutors i have changed. so if i was going a head gasket or something of that nature then i would use a timing light. but something like that is easy enough and if you dont have a light its good enough as long as you careful. obviously if you havent done it before then a light would probably be best cause you wont know what to do and you could end up with timing that is to retarded or to advanced.

There's no difference between removing the distributor when you change a head gasket vs just changing the distributor. I can't believe you think there's a difference. Even if you have done it a million times, you're never going to line it up properly. I guarantee you, the timing would be set differently every time.

To properly change the distributor on a G2 teg, a timing light must be used. If the distributor is improperly installed, the car may still run but the performance will be affected. Moving the distributor towards the front of the car will retard the timing. Moving it towards the passenger cabin, will advance the timing. If the timing is advanced or retarded too much, the preformance will be affected(even gas mileage). This is the reason a timing light must be used. For those who would like to argue the point that this is not necessary, please refer to the Helms Acura service manual(section 23). If necessary, I will provide pages from the Helms manual.

Long drawn out post truncated to reveal my point:

Use the timing light.

Make it tight, make it right. Words the Navy taught me that have never failed.

And if the timing is advanced too much, you can detonate. Detonation is fun!
