Default Clutch/Maint light connection?

I have a 96 GSR, stock, with 65K miles. This morning I started it up and the maint requid light came on and stayed on. From what I've read, this light is just a dummy light to remind you of routine maintenance. However, also this morning my clutch has developed a very unusual feel. It has suddenly become really "mushy" with a lot of play in the pedal. Yesterday everything was perfect. No maintenance light and no problems with the clutch. My question is....is the maintenance required light truly just a dummy light or could there be some connection between this light and my clutch problem? Both of these things occurred at the same time. Maybe it is coincidence, but it seems very odd. Like I said, the clutch was perfect yesterday. The transmission has been serviced in the last year. Flushed out and replaced with Honda MTF. Any ideas? Thanks.

1st of all u should bleed ur lines...maybe u caught some air...then u should reset ur ecu...and ur done, if the gear go in fine u shouldnt have a problem...but make sure u change ur oil, air filter and spark plugs then reset the ecu

what lines are you referring to? spark plugs, air filter, oil, oil filter, all of that is good to go. all brand new. replaced about 6 months ago (oil sooner of course). My question is why is my clutch so mushy? Seems to shift fine other than the fact that there is so much "give" in the pedal. From perfect to mush overnight, this wasn't a gradual change. And could this be related to the maintenance light? Thanks again

humm well i dk what to tell u i got a new clutch put in today and it feels FREAKIN great i mean the pedal is real soft but it gets hard like after 20 min of drivin i dk i could be because the fluid is cold, but i dont think it has anything to do with the maint light, i think that light get triggerd at 30k, 60k, and 90k miles so u might have just have to do ur 60k mile maintenace

wicked_geezer has no idea what he is talking about. That light is just a reminder and utterly useless. It triggers 7500 miles after you reset. Has absolutely nothing to do with your clutch. If your clutch feels weird check and bleed the clutch lines. If you are still having problems replace the master and slave cylinders. If you get to the point where you are replacing the cylinders make sure you use a flare nut wrench or else you'll strip the brake lines. Good luck, if you need too it is a pretty straightforward job (did both on my 95 Civic)

Right, the Maint. Req. light and the funny feel in ur clutch pedal have nothing to do with each other. My car does the same thing with the clutch, and it really is a pain in the arse.

If you've ever bled brake lines, that would give you a head start on bleeding the clutch. The clutch bleed valve is under the hood however, right in front of your engine. It's a little nipple that sticks out towards the radiator on the passenger side.

Once you locate that nipple, you can start the bleeding procedure, usually having two people. One person is at the clutch, pumping it up and down, FULLY, with your HAND, because your clutch is too weak to come back up to regular position on its own. The other person at the bleed nipple will losen the nut that it's attached to and perform the bleeding until all the air is out of the system. Your clutch will get back to it's normal strength.

As you're bleeding, make sure you keep an eye on the clutch fluid reservoir under the hood next to the brake fluid reservoir. Clutch fluid is the same as brake fluid, so use DOT 3 fluid to maintain a healthy level.

If you're worried about it happening again, keep an eye once a week on your clutch fluid reservoir. If it's getting low on fluid, simply keep adding fluid to keep a healthy level. If you don't, once the clutch is pressed, u risk the chance of sucking more air back into the system.

It's easy, trust me, and sorry i typed so much. No worries, prolly a leak somewhere, have it checked out if you're so worried about it. It's prolly not a big deal.

csprague vbmenu_register("postmenu_2635192", true); i know what im talkin about...ur suppose to get a different kind of service at 30k...60k...and 90k....and any other time should be for spark plugs, oil, air filter, fluid check, radiator fluid and what not....and no its not useless the light reminds u when to get ur shieeet done

Patman thanks for the advice. I guess the light coming on and my clutch screwing up at exactly the same time was just coincidence. I guess my master cylinder is leaking. I reached up and felt the top of the clutch pedal near the firewall and there's some fluid on it. The reservoir is empty. Probably need to just replace the master and slave.
