i got a 98 gsr and the check engine light went on, so plug it into the computer and the code was p 1607 whick is emg/pmg internal circiut failer A. what does that mean? what do i fix ?and whats this gonna cost me?

 

it means that your ECM is malfunctioning(an internal problem). reset the unit by removing the under hood fuse. i don't remember the exact name for it but its rated at 7.5 amps. you can also pull the battery for a couple minutes. keep in mind, if you do either of these your radio will be reset and if you have the original one, it will require a code to be inputted.

after resetting it, start the car and let it idle for 5-10 seconds. if the code gets stored again(check engine light comes on), swap the ECM with a known good ECM. if that ECM does not store a code, replace your original ECM.

 

It's called the back up (radio)7.5 fuse. Do exactly as stated above. You might want to look for someone selling a used P72 ECM.

 

i did what u said and reset the computer and light never went back on and it runs fine now.strange!

 

cool, it may have been a random problem. keep an eye out and if it happens again, something is definetly wrong.
