Default reverse grind

hey doods,

i still have my 93 teg and since memorial day, i have had no reverse gear. when i took it out of the shop the mechanic said that to get all the gears back he had replaced the front left axle. and a couple of times it has shifted into reverse but about 98% of the time it grinds. we lifted it up and popped the right axle out and while grinding in reverse (god how i wanted him to put it in neutral) the wheels turned slowly but no doing. i took it to ammco and they quoted me 2200 bux to overhaul. i have been driving it without reverse for 4-5 months now and short of selling it i want to solve this problem.
i would love to do this myself and would be willing to go out and buy necissary tools but from rereading my chilton, i fear that my total lack of experiance may cause more harm than good.

funny thing is, it grinds less in neutral. and sometimes when i start it it grinds immediatly in park. probably 1 out of 20 times.

help?

If I was in your shoes I'd probably try to find a junkyard tranny to swap with.

well the engine is also burning oil pretty bad. i kind of thought it might be best to buy an engine and transmission together. kindof thought i might go for a high performance 1.8L. does anyone know of a good place to get one? is ebay reliable enough to buy a jdm?

that is close, can someone give me a rundown of why reverse would poop out? i have been driving this like a baby but i decide to take a 300 mile drive and open it up, but forgot to service the transmission and when i went off the road on a sharp offramp, well, this is the only occurance that i can think of that could even remotely be called a accident. the offramp is way too short and sharp.

besides the sensors, hoses and wires,
and mounting the damn thing, what do i have to worry about?

is the main thing mounting? cause i dont know and i need to?

i have a chiltons but it just doesnt seem to tell me what i need.

i mount it, and pop in the drive shaft and the tires should turn.

12 mounting bolts, some wires some hoses, put it back together and wooowla, i have tires turning?
