Default Oil

Okay so i want to switch to synthectic oil in my 00 teg ls. From what i've found out on this site it sounds like the only drawback is that synthetic could hurt an engine with too many miles. I was just wondering if i could switch at 70k without any worries.

Any help is appericiated

The only theoretical concern about switching to synthetic oil is that the additional "detergent" agents may remove sludge that is plugging up worn-out gaskets.

I switched my GTi over to synthetic when I bought her with 120K on the clock. The oil pan gasket leaked a teensy bit on the first cycle of synthetic oil, but the problem resolved itself within 2500 miles.

Given my experiences, I advise switching to synthetic oil and replacing any seals that are truly worn out. Just follow the owner's manual and buy the correct grade of motor oil.

Also, change your oil regularly and use a quality-built filter.
FRAM filters are crap; I use Wix or Hastings or Purolator.

Then find an independent store... there must be one nearby.
And when you change your oil, save the old filter and cut it open.

You'll see where the people at FRAM decided to cheap out.
Treated paper end-caps.
Cheap filtration media.
PLASTIC pressure relief valves.

There's a link in the Integra FAQ to a head-to-head comparison of oil filters. It's an off-site link to NTPOG.. a group of Prelude owners in north Texas who put up a fair bit of time and money to objectively compare the filtration performance and construction of the major oil filter brands.

If memory serves, one of the authors belongs to the Society of Automotive Engineers.

It's good reading.
