Goodbye peglegs, welcome back clacking
Well, seven months into trying to revive my wounded GS-R, its back running again. The stock differential was tossed in favor of a Type-R LSD, as well some work inside the block. The problem is, I've still got a nasty tapping sound coming from behind my intake manifold. I know a bunch of guys on here had had the same problem, so I'm hoping someone got an answer. (No, its not just the standard honda tapping, and its not the heat shield... this is metal to metal, rod-bent clacking. The rods are brand new though :fawk: )
The LSD swap was a piece of cake. We almost blew the whole thing by installing the reverse idler upside down, but after about three full days, we fixed it, pressed the bearings in and dropped the sucker. The car handles super, and goes right around the corners, even on my buddy's 15" BMW rims with 600 Treadwear tires on it. If anyone is considering the swap, I'd highly recommend it. The only special tools you need are a bearing puller set, a press, and the oil seal drivers.
Give me a yell if someone has an answer to the noise. I'm taking it to a mechanic within the next week, but if I can avert that, I'd very much like to. Thanks in advance
