back fire... help

Default back fire... help

ok so my 91 ls hasnt been running for a while... about a month. i dont have a job or any money right now so i have to figure out what to do with the help of my friends. when i try to crank it it back fires. thats it. rurr rurr rurr pop pop. my brother in law said that it was the timing so we checked that but still just rurr rurr rurr pop pop. i have another friend who is helping now but we just dont know where to start looking. anything at this point would help. any suggestions?

That, and check to see if the bolts on your exhaust manifold are tight.

would that cause the car to not run at all?

Do a tune up. Plugs/wires/cap/rotor.

my friend took one of the plug wires off of the distributer cap and held it to a screwdriver while i tried to crank the car to make sure it fired but it looked kind of slow (about twice a second) and my distributer looks like it was replaced with one from a junk yard because it has some numbers and letters written on it with paint marker so i guess im gonna have to do that

i live in the same building as a kid with a 96 tegra that was doing the same exact thing. i gave the engine bay a once over, his plug wires were all in the right order, i pulled a plug, all nasty lookin...carboned up, not really a big deal, but then i noticed that someone had put in some ac delco plugs. ive always been told to keep the same plugs that the factory puts in. ngk for honda/acura, ac delco for gm, motorcraft i think it is for fords...i gave him a ride to the good ol parts store where we picked up some ngk plugs. an i swear thats all we did and he was good to go...
