Blown Timing Belt
My girlfriend has a 94 Integra RS with the 1.8L non-vtec and it has blown a timing belt. I don't know a lot about these engines but I have had people say that the motor usually is shot if this happens. I don't think this is the case because there is no sound of metal or anything from the piston hitting the valves or anything like that. I was wondering if these engines have a built in safety to prevent the engine from going if the belt goes and if not is there a simple way of checking to see if the motor is screwed or if it is okay to just have the belt replaced. My girlfriend doesnt have a lot of money to get a new engine or anything so simple fixes for this problem would be much appreciated.
Also i have a brand new alternator (110 amp) and a brand new distributor for this motor that were going to go on before the car crapped out so I would be willing to sell them if i cant get this motor going again. Feel free to email me if anyone is interested in them and we can work out a price.
Thanks

There's no built in safety. Hondas have interference engines, so generally when the timing belt lets go, there is valve damage. You could check by performing a compression test, and if there is low/no compression then the valves are most likely bent. I prefer pulling the head and inspecting, but that gets more involved. This happened to me about a year ago, and I ended up having bent valves after pulling the head.
