Maybe I'm mistaken, but don't batteries vent acidic fumes?

Acidic fumes, sitting over gas tank, corrosion on posts, need I say anymore.
But if you are intent on having the battery in your living room, why don't you consider installing a jumper quik connect similar to what is on a tow truck or some pickups.
