Default Suspension install problem, Please Help!

This is a bit long, and if you need me to clarify anything just let me know....

A buddy and I were throwing on new shocks/ struts on my DA. This is the first time I had tried it, he has done it on an eg before...we got the rears on fine, they were pretty straight forward, the problem occured after we took the front strut/spring out and replaced it with the new one.

We went to bolt the upper control arm back into the shock tower area, but we can't get the arm to reach within 5 inches of the tower! it goes in and then it stops, I think he pulled on the caliper too hard and possibly slipped the axle out or something but we have no clue!

My front driverside is the one that is having the problem, and my rotor is sitting diagnol to the ground, facing down to the ground sort of like this

\-----

, so i don't know whats going on, we've tried jacking it up and pushing, turning the wheel and pushing, but when the car is in gear, and we just let it sit there, the steering wheel still turns, but when we push on it hard when it is jacked up, it locks in gear like it should, any help would be greatly appreciated!!
