Default Will 87 octane regular unlead cause engine to sputter like a motorcycle?

I just switched out my civic's 1.5L engine to a GSR. It haven't used up all the unleaded gasoline in it...and it's making sputtering noise like a motorcycle. Could that be the cause or something else? I noticed the rpm doesn't idle like normal...it goes up and down sometimes. Thanks in advance.

GSR motor takes 91+

That could be the problem. An easy way to test it is to dump a bottle of octane booster in the tank, or depending on how much gas you have left, fill it with the highest grade you can find.

Yes, you are detonating. Go fill the rest of the tank with 91...if you have a full tank, drain it.

Make sure that the ignition timing is set to spec as well. If it is, retard it a little until you have used up the crappy gasoline and then reset it to spec.

Will driving around for 40 minutes with detonation hurt the engine?

The reason I drove it around was because I tried to use up the gas...before I knew of such things as an octane booster.... Hopefully nothing is wrong with the car.

Hopefully, nothing was damaged. Toasted pistons, rings, valves, etc. could have occurred and would be totally crappy on a new engine. Just make sure that you do something about the crappy gas in the tank.
