Hey, I have a 97 integra gsr and i think i may be burning oil. when i stomp on the gas a lot of carbon comes out of my exh. some people said that i was probably just running really rich, but i don't know if that is the case.

does anyone know what would cause a 97 integra to burn oil? any suggestions?

seals? damaged engine? does anyone know what is probably causing this, and how much it will cost to get fixed?

BTW, the car has like 97K miles, and I don't drive hard at all.

I had the same problem. Turns out it was the piston rings. It would send a puff of smoke out the exhaust whenever the throttle was mashed. I had to replace the rings and since I did, there hasn't been any burning at all.

 

ok, do you know how much a shop would charge to replace them?

 

I did it myself but I heard that the Acura dealership will charge about $900 for the service.

 

Damn. that really sux. i wish i didn't have 2 left hands and could get under there and do it myself.... how long did that work take? what did the parts cost?

 

About 10 hours total with help from my girlfriend. The parts ran me about $350. It was a bitch of a job and I hope I never have to do it again.

 

is the smoke black or white/blueish?

 

it really depends on the color of the smoke. Is it blackish smoke, or is it white with a tint of blueish?

 

that i don't really know...the blueish is oil, but i think it is buring oil because i have to keep adding and there are no leaks.... do you suggest piston rings as well?

 

My smoke was a little black and a little blue. I know it was running rich but being 3 quarts low a month after an oil change suggests something is really wrong. If you do decide to do the piston rings, I suggest you also replace the valve seals since the head is off anyway.
