Default Driving with a Cel 67

My check engine light has been on for a while. It is a 67 on my 98 GSR. I took it to my shop and they hooked it up to the computer. It is the Cat Convertor. Not the sensors or anything. The actual cat. So they reset it and told me if it came back on I would need to replace it. Well it came back on.

I have been told an aftermarket cat will be around $300.

I don't feel like spending $300 on that part if it is not hurting my car. I don't like hurting the enviornmet either but I'd rather not pay $300 to get that check engine light off if its not hurting my car. Are there cheaper cats out there? Could I possibly find a used one and stick it on? Any suggestions? I see $15 dollar things on ebay but I'm guessing that is just a straight pipe.

Thanks

CEL codes: http://www.c-speedracing.com/faq/05.php

#67: Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold malfunctioning or defective catalyst system

It can cause the engine to run poorly and change the fuel efficiency. Check at a junk yard for another one. They will be cheaper there. Also, try www.sohfast.com.

hih man

$300 for an aftermarket cat, who fed you that bs. You can get a good high flow cat made by Magnaflow for much less than that.

Is it bad if you don't have an O2 sensor connected?

i had a code 67 with my high flow cat but the light eventually went off (and my 2nd o2 sensor is disconnected, guys at the speedshop said it wouldnt change anything since i had a code 67 already). recently the CEL came back on at WOT but whatever. im planning on getting a carsound cat soon, ebay has decent prices, less than $100 i believe. i dunno if the 2nd o2 sensor changes MPG's... i get 23 or so per gallon and its been that way since i put on the 18" wheels
