Crank sensor failure = new distributor = $500?
Hi all,
I have a 90 integra RS 1.8 - I just had the timing replaced - dammit.
Drove around town a little bit for a few days, no probs - felt and sounded better than in years. Then went on the freeway for about 10 minutes, and when I exited, the following happened:
engine light came on
lots of power lost
engine sputtered like old vw bug
when came to a stop after the exit, revs dropped like it was gonna die (but didn't)
After shopping, car had trouble starting, and then all the above continued
On the drive back, car could barely do 60, and there were little "hiccups" in the engine - drop in car/engine speed (kinda like rev limiter feeling, but not as prominent). Revs were normal (3k mebbe).
After lettin car sit for a day or so, started it up to take it back to the shop, back to that good ol feeling it initially had. So I figure it happens when engine is warm.
Car shop hooked car up to their puter, and it spit out code #P04 - which they said was crank sensor failure, and the whole distributor had to be replaced.
They wanted $400 for the part and $99 for the labor.
How does all this sound to you folks?
Thanks for any input...

I dont know why the distributor would be bad from the crank sensor going bad, sounds a little fishy to me, I would ask them exactly why this problem would cause the dist to go bad and post their response on here but sounds like bs to me.
The crank position sensor is in the distributor. However, their prices are way off. $99 for labor is rape, considering it takes about 10 minutes to swap out and set the timing. $400 for a distributor is also rape. You should be able to find a used one for a 90-91 integra LS at a junkyard for around $150 or so, or you could get a remanufactured one at an autozone/pepboys type store for much less than $400.

Hm. Seems like I'm finding distribs all over the inet for $200-$230 - you really figure I'm not gonna do better than $150 at a junkyard?
Thanks for the replies guys!

It will run, but I believe that the ECU will be running in limp mode, so don't drive it hard.
