i think that i might have a giant problem. After getting the car back we tried starting it. it worked and i then shut it off. The engine or starter kept going even after taking the key out of the ignition. we had no idea what to do, but dad quickly disconnected the battery and it stopped. It has never done this before. Im wondering if the people at the shop did this themselves. Please help.

If you go to autozone (i know i know ) they should give you a free battery and alternator check. Atlease that is what they do here in Shreveport. They might be able to pinpoint the problem before you go forking up money for something you might not need. Just an idea. Let the autozone flaming begin!

There is nothing wrong with Autozone as long as you know what you need. I shop there and haven't had a problem, except for this one alternator... anyway.

You say either the engine or the starter kept going when you took the key out. If you can't tell which by the sound, then you better ask for help.

If the starter solenoid was stuck, that would do it. Get another starter.

Or it might be a flaky ignition switch?? You'll want to do some tests with a voltmeter to find out which.

Judging by your initial post, I'd say it's your starter solenoid. That is if by "clicking noise" you mean one loud click.

My car was doing this a little more than a year ago and I went to Autozone where they told me that my starter and alternator were fine. Somebody here at HAN suggested that I take my starter out, take the solenoid apart and sand the black pits off of the copper contact points. I did this and the car has started perfectly ever since. That was last September. So it's been a year.

you hit the nail right on the head, however when i took the solenoid apart I saw no black pits. However it does look very worn down. Is there anywhere that you can buy these copper contact points, or can you only buy a new starter?

I found a place online that sold them, but they were specialty ones and they were kind of expensive. I assume you can buy them at a parts store however. Did you try taking some fine sandpaper to your existing contacts??
