Default problem changing outer cv boot...

so the outboard boot on the driver side cv shaft is torn, and i'm trying to replace the boot... problem is that the manual says in order to get to the outboard boot, i have to take off the inner joint and boot and the damper as well... in other words, i have to strip everything off the shaft just to get to the damn outer boot... is there an easier way? the shaft is out of the car already, and i only examined it briefly as it was getting dark outside, but it didnt seem like i could pull the outer joint off... any ideas?

All you have to to is knock off the outer joint, slip the boot on, clean up the joint, repack it well and pound it back onto the shaft. Hit it with a big brass mallet and to put it on, you have to hold the shaft straight and slam the joint onto it .

Its actually really easy, just kinda brute.
