Q's For California folks
Hi there,
I am presently living in Massachusetts, but we plan on moving to California eventually, I'd like to take our Integra with us, but one thing I am not sure about is the smog test in CA.
I would like to modify the Teg a little, but I have heard that anything different under the hood causes the car to fail, but when I look in magazines etc with heavily modded cars, a lot of them have California plates on them. Why is this?? I thought they would fail the smog?
I am confused as to what is legal and what isn't in California, can you clear this up for me!
thanks
Chris

you can have mods but they need to be certified by california aka C.A.R.B. if your parts are CARB certified then they usually come with a sticker or something so that the smog guy knows its approved. without this sticker they will fail you on visual inspecition no matter if your car passes emissions. also the emission test is pretty strict, so you car needs to be in good order..took my 2001 gsr like 3 times to pass smog. those cars in magazines are illegal and probably have hookups when it comes to smog...CALI smog sux
If you’re planning on moving to Cali, then ya you best start buying parts that are carb legal. Most high end aftermarket companies produce carb exempt performance parts.
I took my car down with a AEM cai and all they did was pop the hood, take down the c.a.r.b sticker #'s down and I passed like nothing

Why are you worried what happens in 2 years? Did you do mods that won't pass the visual inspection etc?
I can't understand why they have failure for visual inspection without even measuring the tailpipe emissions, its the most crazy thing I've heard....
Seems like everyone is assumed guilty and they have to prove their innocence....
What if I were to turbocharge my car, I would have to get an approved turbo installation, what parts exactly carry these CARB numbers? Every part or just the main things like the exhaust manifold etc?
Thanks
Chris

And yes, motoring enthusiasts like us are being unfairly targeted.
If you want to be boosted and legal, your only option is to go with a system that has recieved a CARB Exemption Order number. The only systems currently on the market that I know of are those by GReddy.
Basically, if it affects any aspect of emissions, it must be certified by CARB.
The only part that has little bearing on CARB legality is the standard cat-back exhaust....but then - those exhaust systems need to comply with the 95 Db(A) noise limit for exhaust sound.
I am mounting a fight to put this nonsense to an end.
And I invite all you Cali folks to join me. CARB's despotic reign must be tempered. Screw this EO crap and let's focus on what is coming out of the tailpipe. If we're ultimately concerned with emissions, then let's focus on emissions for once. :a:
