Default 5th gear popping out in Integra GS-R

I have a 2001 Integra GS-R that only has 62,000 miles on it and 5th gear keeps popping out. The problem only seems to occur after driving on the highway about 20 miles in 5th. But once it starts to pop out and keeps happening every 20-30 seconds. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what type of problem this could be (synchro, fork, etc) and about how much it could cost to fix.

i'm not quite sure what causes gear popping, but in my experience, rebuilds will cost more than just getting a used tranny elsewhere.

Generally, the problem lies either in the synchro gears, or the locking collar that mates the gear to the layshaft. The root cause is generally abuse.

In terms of whether or not to rebuild your tranny:

While a used tranny is cheaper in terms of initial outlay, it is always a gamble. You could wind up with a dud tranny. A rebuild, OTOh will be as certain a solution as one can get. So if you're planning to keep the car for another eight to ten years, I'd spend the money on a rebuild, and have the comfort of knowing the tranny is truly fixed.

first thing, go change your tranny fluid. id suggest either: pennsoil synchromesh, or gm synchromesh. oem fluid is decent too, but the synchromesh products offer better synchro action.

if you do go with a rebuild...why not spring for an LSD install

Do NOT follow this suggestion ! ^ :awais:

Honda specifies that only their transmission fluid is to be used.
Any other fluid will increase shift effort and syncro wear.

Furthermore, if there is mechanical damage in the transmission, changing the tranny fluid isn't going to help.

what he said, I have not noticed any untoward effect from using Redline MTL for the last 100k miles
