Default All this week

Ok, so I'm trying to do a friend a favor and get his '89 Integra running. It was overheatin, and I narrowed it down to the water pump. So, I replaced the water pump, and while in there, I replaced the drive belts and timing belt. When I got it back together, it ran, but not very good. Also, the check engine light had come on. At that time, I didn't know how to check codes, but I found that out here. I thought maybe I had the timing wrong...so I went back and checked....seems like I was maybe a tooth off. Anyway, get it going again and it runs WORSE...sounds like it's skipping....like totally unrelated to the work I did. Checked the codes and I'm getting a 9 and 16. I reset the codes. Well, the more I mess with it, the worse it gets, and finally it won't start at all. So I check, and none of the plugs are sparking. It has new NGK wires, and new plugs too, so I go further back. I look in the D Cap and see that the "silver spring loaded thingy" that connects the D Cap to the coil isn't there. That's gotta be it! So, I change out the cap and rotor cause they're cheap and NADA. I do the diagnostics in the Haynes book, and it tells me to replace the ICM...and NADA. So, even though the resistance is reading right on the coil, I change it out too....I can't think of what else it would be. Well, I change it out and Nothing.....then SOMETHING. I don't know why, but all of a sudden #3 and #4 cylinders were sparking, and then all of them. I think this is great. Put all the plugs back in and NOTHING. Still won't start, but I think it's still sparking. Right now it's sitting in the garage with the plugs out because I thought maybe it's flooded from a few days of cranking with no fire.

Besides your advice on what to do next, I've got another question. Can the ECM give codes if the engine isn't starting? After clearing the codes, I'm not getting any more, so I'm thinking everything is cool with the FI and CYP.

WHAT NEXT? I was just trying to change a water pump.....

did you check the engine timing. if you did not re-time the engine correctly after changing the water pump, it will not start.
