im sorry if this topic was posted before but yesterday i was driving side by side with my friend who owns a wrx and i gunned it and he said it puffed out alot of black smoke is this normal or should i get it checked out.my mods are headers full catback exhaust and cai.thanks guys

 

first of all it is header not headers and you might be running a bit rich

 

It's not unusual for a Type R w/those modifications to belch black at higher RPM. The computer's dumping fuel to be safe.

If there's blue in the smoke, that's a different story and you should have it checked out ASAP. How many miles on your Type R?

 

my R has 48315 on it.it also has a strong exhaust smell all the time.i forgot to add also it has a random technology high flow cat...should i get a apexi vafc if my car is running to rich?

 

get a v-afc. when you add the bolt-on's you increase the amount of air into the engine. the computer tries in vain to balance everything out. with the v-afc you can customize your a/f ratio while getting rid of the vtec "dip". you will still burp out a little black smoke when pushing the engine hard. esecially when the big cams take over but, it wont be as pronounced. i saw 8 hp to the wheels with the apex'i plus the regular bolt on's, jun flywheel and a cm stage 4. absolutely worth the money.
