I wouldn't trust your schnoz, quite frankly. More than likely, the rich smell you're noticing is a function of a cold engine.

If the car is stock (as you say), and the Check Engine Light is not / has not illuminated while driving, it's worth going through with the test IMO. If you fail, the printout will show where & what specific types of emissions are excessive. The diagnostic report itself will be a helpful tool to figure out what is wrong. And to be extra conservative, get the car up to operating temp by driving around a bit prior to going in for the smog check. You'll probably do fine.

DO a tuneup, plugs, rotor and cap. Get some of that STP, or whatever brand you like fuel system cleaner, run it through a tank of gas, and change the oil. If you can only do one thing, change the oil

You could also retard the ignition timing, I didthat and all of what Tobra suggested (other than rotor and cap) in my 94 RS and passed with flying colours.

Had I known this earlier on... I would have given essentially the same advice as Tobra. Do you happen to have your last smog check report around? If so, post up your figures and perhaps something will jump out.

BTW, does your teg still have its OEM catalytic converter?

At this point the OEM cat is now 10 years old and probably not doing as good a job as it can. Along with all the standard tuneup stuff, a replacement cat would be a good idea just for the general good and welfare of the car. Don't go OEM though--you can get a high flow for a whole lot cheaper.

Fats, I have the original cat with about 120k miles and last smog check was clean as a whistle. You mean the get plugged up or they lose efficiency as material is adsorbed on to the catalyst material? Oh yeah, the cat will work better if it is as hot as possible
