I just got my skunk2 stage II cams, valvesprings, and retainers. I'm wondering if a VAFC would be enough in the electronics department, or if I'm gonna have to go hondata/ other engine management system. I really don't want to convert to OBDI .

It is enough to get by with but certainly isn't enough to use the full potential of the cams.

Why would you not want to switch to OBD1?

I'm in California, I figure if I don't switch to OBDI, it would be a little easier to *possibly* pass smog.

Switching to OBD1 and back to OBD2 just consists of plugging your stock computer back in. 3 plugs. It is short and easy. Not like trying to swap out a testpipe.

hmm.. if I do switch to OBDI, any suggestions on what ECU to get? I would assume p72 would be the one to get? Also, I have an '01 R, so would it need a little more than just one plug difference? What I'm trying to get at, is what would be the best way to tune my setup...

edit: Thanks in advance for any help, I realize it must be frustrating trying to educate a newb :P

You use an adapter harness to make the P72 work. P72 is the best ECU but a P28 will work as well (No Knock sensor so you have to listen)

What do you mean one plug difference? Best way to tune your setup is using the Hondata and a tuner (someone with the software) Where are you located?

yeah my verdict would be a Kenji ECU (chipped P28) with the conv. harness. Good base to work with and his ECU is cheap and offers gains until you get Hondata or a VAFC.

I'm located in Southern California, and I meant a wiring harness, not a plug (sorry, wasn't quite awake when I posted that). What I meant to ask is if there are there any sensors that are different in the engine when I switch to OBDI . So what I'm looking at is the outlay for a p72 (I'd rather have the knock sensor and the IAB) the hondata chip, a wiring harness, and of course, money for the tune? Also, when I switch to my stock ECU for smog, should I worry about running lean/rich?

No worry on the stock ECU switch. The only thing you will find different is that the Hondata will mot use the second O2 sensor. I would recommend removing it as not to damage it. Other than that everthing is simeple plug and play.

Make sure you get an OBD1 P72 (Lots of people try and sell the OBD2 P72 to you)

Well, given I already spliced all the wires for that second O2 sensor when I changed my cat, I don't suppose that would be a problem :roll:. I guess I'll ebay it up for a p72, I've seen quite a few JDM p72's for sale, guess I gotta pray that they're OBDI. Thanks for everything, I'm sure I'll have some more questions soon.
