My brother got me a JDM key for my R for my birthday and had it cut using my spare (not the valet key). When I tried using it the first time this morning, it would unlock all the doors, fit in the ignition and crank the engine, but then wouldn't actually turn over. I switched it up a couple times with my original key, and it worked fine, but still wouldn't work with the new one. Any ideas?

Are you kidding? Dammit... Just curious, I've seen STi keys for sale, do they have a similar thing or do they not have the chip in it?

There is an imobilizer in your car from the facory, the chip in the key is specific to your ECU, and cannot be used with any other keys other than the ones that came stock with your car, or ones that are ordered through acura with the key codes that came with your car. If you want to use aftermarket keys, you'll have to either switch ECUs, or have your immobilizer disabled.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news.....

Aj

Am I able to disable the immobilizer myself, or do I need to take the ECU to the dealer or something? And could I order a JDM or some other key from the dealer with the code?

*smacks sscguy upside the head*

I wouldn't disable your immobilizer just to be able to use a JDM key! Ask your dealership if maybe they can program your key but other than that, thank your brother for the nice gift and go back to using your regular keys. They're unique, anyways. Only ITR keys have a red Acura logo whereas all other Acura keys have white logos

Hate to say it, but not all the ITRs came with red key, heck, mine are white, and as are most of my friends. I do though, have a buddy who has a TL Type-S whos keys have a red acura logo, go figure. Either way, it wears off pretty quickly

I wouldn't get rid of your imobilizer either, just to run a different key, and no you can't do it your self, nor can the dealer, or would even if they could. And, no, they can't program a key, especially as it won't have a chip.

Any way, good luck with it, I would just say the hell with it and use your factory keys.

Later,
Aj

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm doing, just "ah, screw it." Thanks for the help anyway.

Now that's tarded  My dealership told me that that was a unique feature of the Type R's... then again, dealerships never lie, do they?
