Default shaky..shaky

Recently my stearing wheel started to shake while I was driving. It has progressively gotten worse. It's not my tires because they are new and it's not the brakes because I can't feel it in the pedal when braking. Sometimes I hear a clanking sound, like two pieces of metal knocking around, and it sounds like it comes from the stearing wheel.
Can anyone help???

your wheels could be out of balance and/or your alignment could be out of wack. bring it to a shop and have them balance the wheels and do the alignment. it won't be too expensive.

not sure about the clanking sound, though. :-/

I just had the tires put on so I hope that wouldn't be the problem but will be mighty pissed if they are unbalanced.
As for the alignment I haven't been cornering hard or hitting pot holes so how else would that get out of whack so bad?
This shaking didn't start but 2 days ago and it came out of the blue it seemed.
Thanks for the advice will bring it to the tire shop tomorrow.

it's possible that a wheel weight may have come off if that is indeed what is what's causing it, so i wouldn't blame the shop (unless they really did screw up). does the shaking change with speed?

also, check out your suspension to make sure nothing is bent or out of place.

It gets more rapid the faster i'm going but it's always the same shake if you know what I mean.
The thing that I find weird is that I can't feel the car itself shake it's really just the steering wheel. My experience is that if the wheel is messed somehow it will shake the whole car or at least the front end.
Could this be a broken mount somewhere that could cause this?

have you used the e-brake a lot to stop? have you slammed hard on your brakes? try rotating your tires...

I never use the e-brake to stop. I haven't slammed on the brakes at all either.
I will try to get my tires rebalanced and rotate them to see it that's it. If not I will have an alignment done.
What could happen if the brakes are slammed on that would make my steering wheel shake the way it is?

well you'd have to slam pretty hard, but i dont know how you drive. (it could wear the rubber away if you do it alot, but you probably aren't that stupid). slamming on them at high speeds can mess them up pretty good too, so if you go 80+ alot and brake fast...

try airing up the tires too, one might be flat, and the other really full and it could be offbalanced.

just some suggestions
