Default Vtec Sputter

My car has been acting weird lately and i cant figure out why. Engine sounds great up to the end of the first x-over, vtec sounds great but when it hits the second at 5800 it cuts off and the engine kinda putts in and out of vtec all the way till 8200? What the heck is goin on, i was gonna put some STP in tomorow but i thought it might be something more severe?

checked the solenoid and it seems fine, look like new.

also if the solenoid was clogged it wouldn't switch over to the first lobe of vtec would it?

First lobe vtec... not to lecture but there is only one vtec x-over at 4400rpms in a stock gsr, 5800rpms is the secondaries in the intake manifold opening. For "surges" like that I would maybe look into the fuel system. My power band felt like it was sugring due to a bad fuel curve. What kind of mods do you have? Are you running a vafc? Are you throwing any codes?
