Default Noise from my engine.

I have a 94 gsr with 140k miles. A few months ago, my engine started making an unpleasant sound. It sounds like a belt noise, very rapid (about 4 beats per second) and low pitch. A friend said it sounds like the lifter has gone bad. Has anyone else had a similiar problem, and what did you do to correct it?

Does the noise go away at high RPMs? and return at idling RPMs?does the noise happen when you start the car? etc...
And anymore info you can give would be helpful
The only thing I can think of would be loose or a dry belt but I need more info

The sound is very prevalent when the car is idling. I can't say for sure if the noise goes away at high rpm. Even if the noise is still there, the regular engine and exhaust noise drowns it out so I wouldn't be able to tell. It's not the belt because I can see that the sound is coming from the engine, but it does sound similar to a sound that you would get from a problematic belt.

I don't know either, that's the term that my friend used, and he is a mechanic.

When you say a problematic belt, do you mean a squeak?
