Default Header question.

For all of you who have headers installed, i have some questions. Im thinking of purchasing DC Ceramic coated 4-2-1 headers to complete my bolt on set up.

Which type of headers do you own, ceramic or ss?
How long have you had the headers for?
How is the discoloration of the headers as time passes?
With the header, how hot does the engine bay get?
How hot does the hood become with the headers?
Is the gain significantly noticeable?
do headers increase noise level? if so, by how much?
what are the advantages and the disadvantages of having headers?

Thanks.

I will try my best to answer your questions:

Q. Which type of header do you own, ceramic or ss?

A. I have the DC Sports 4-2-1 Two Piece Stainless Steel Header

Q. How long have you had the header for?

A. I've had mine since July 2002 (I've managed to put 18,000 miles on the car since installing the header, my odometer reads 20,700 now!)

Q. How is the discoloration of the header as time passes?

A. It changes from silver to gold with a little purple in it. (I clean my header with Wenol it's an Ultra soft metal polish for stainless steel. I also use it to polish my Greddy EVO Exhaust, make sure to buy the blue box version) I clean my engine and header every three months, which you can see a photo of below.

Q. With the header, how hot does the engine bay get? How hot does the hood become with the header?

A. It doesn't really get that hot, I haven't noticed the engine bay or hood any hotter then when I had the stock manifold on.

Q. Is the gain significantly noticeable?

A. I did notice a decent gain in the top end after adding it, but not a balls to the wall gain. It was the last piece of the puzzle. (I did my AEM CAI first, then two weeks later I did the Greddy EVO Cat-Back, then the following week I put my DC Sports SS header on.

Q. Does the header increase noise level? if so, by how much?

A. It's hard to tell if it increased the noise level because of the screaming sound from the AEM CAI, but I did have someone else drive my car after installing the header and the exhaust did sound a little deeper.

Q. What are the advantages and the disadvantages of having a header?

A.

Advantages:

1) Looks baddass under the hood.
2) Does add some power to the top end.
3) Can't think of anymore reasons to get it, so just get it.

Disadvantages:

1) The downpipe that connects to the catalytic converter can sometime scrape, depending on how low you're dropped.

2) I've known people who have bought the ceramic ones and they tend to rust after 6 months and are much easier to crack from underneath when you scrape or hit something.

FINAL Word.....

Get the DC Sports SS Header, I highly recommend it!

Fred Cook pretty much summed it up.. i have the dc ceramic header though. all of the rumors about it cracking are false. i live in philly and we just had the worse snowstorm in 6 years here and the header is still fine. i think the ceramic is better at insulating the heat so if your concerned about the heat prooblem, get the ceramic one. it also saves time cleaning/polising since it wont discolor like the ss will. i personally didnt notice much gains at all and i installed a rs*r catback with a carsound high flow cat the all at the same time. sometimes i think i do but then maybe im just trying to lie to myself. the only bolt on i noticed a difference on was the aem cai.

Default Re: Header question.

here's my take on headers....

1.Which type of headers do you own, ceramic or ss?
DC sports 4-2-1 ceramic

2.How long have you had the headers for?
abt 1 yr

3.How is the discoloration of the headers as time passes?
not much discoloration

4.With the header, how hot does the engine bay get?
abt the same w/ stock headers

5.How hot does the hood become with the headers?
same as above

6.Is the gain significantly noticeable?
i noticed a gain in the low end and a slight gain throughtout the rpm.... 4-2-1 headers helps in the low end and 4-1 headers helps in the high end...... i dunno y ppl keep saying they feel gains in the high end with the 4-2-1

7.do headers increase noise level? if so, by how much?
the more bolt-ons u have, the louder the setup will get.... not much tho

8.what are the advantages and the disadvantages of having headers?
looks good, and give u a lil more power

hope that helps

I just installed an OBX ss header along with a high flow cat. Its noticably louder, and there is more pull. Probably because I installed the two at once. I went with the OBX b/c I can pick it up for $135, and plan on going turbo within the next year or so anyway, so I didn't really care how long it will last. Now to just get my vafc, and cam gear installed and tuned.

Which type of headers do you own, ceramic or ss?
ss greddy on accord, cc dc on civic

How long have you had the headers for?
4yrs/1yr

How is the discoloration of the headers as time passes?
bronze-purple, stains easily / gets dirty, cc coating is burning off a bit

With the header, how hot does the engine bay get?
same for both

How hot does the hood become with the headers?
not really for both

Is the gain significantly noticeable?
just a bit more power through the range / great top end (jdm 4->1)

do headers increase noise level? if so, by how much?
i could hear the valve train more on the accord. adds a mean raspy noise

what are the advantages and the disadvantages of having headers?
some headers hang lower than stock ones. since theyre not cast iron, they can be punctured, but theyre less likely to crack

I also have an OBX 4-2-1 header. I can't tell if it's any louder because of the CAI. But I did notice it rev's a bit quicker from 4K and up. As far as heat and discoloration, the temp hasn't changed really...if anything it's cooler due to the fact that the steal does not retain heat as much as cast iron. Discoloration, shit if it bothers you buy a roll of header wrap, bout $40. + will cut down on the under-hood temp.

I really like the sound of it, doesn't sound ricey compared to other exhausts out there. It's REAL Deep. The sound is very distinctive! You won't get annoyed by it! I highly recommend it!

The one thing you have to do with the Greddy EVO Exhaust is replace the two rear rubber mounts that the hangers slide into. The one's that come with the car aren't strong enough to hold up the EVO muffler and over time the rubber mounts will stretch, causing the muffler to hang low.

One of my good friends owns a Performance Shop; they do custom exhausts, engine swaps, and pretty much everything else. I got some shorter heavy-duty rubber mounts to replace the stock ones with. The muffler is now tucked up in there and there is about 1 inch between the tip and the bumper. Compared to 2 1/2 inches with the stock rubber mounts.
