is it backfiring through the exhaust or intake? could be running to rich/ or lean out of many reasons (bad fuel pressure reg, intake or exhaust valve, timing to advanced or retarded, bad igniter or coil, valve clearance too tight, vac leak, egr valve stuck) what do the plugs look like? Does it only happen under load? U can set timing by checking for marks on timing belt cover falling in between marks on crank pulley or on some older cars pulling out the inspection plug on side of auto trans. Engine has to be warmed up at idle for doing this. Also check cam timing.

unless timing belt is stretched beyond belief,(which would definately need attention sooner than later) the timing shouldn't be the problem, unless serious wear on some components or unless somebody's been wrenching around under the hood your motor shouldn't ever be out of time, that's not really a maintenance check, like i said unless a component is worn badely, t/b or t/b tensioner, but say you had the t/b off, as far as timing it you would have to match marks on cams, and crank, as well as marking #1 at tdc. and if dist. was removed it's time to get the timing light out

it's OBDII. the ECM controls timing 100%. if timing is off, you have to replace the ECM.

if you're getting a CEL, have it scanned to find the source of the problem.
