unless timing belt is stretched beyond belief,(which would definately need attention sooner than later) the timing shouldn't be the problem, unless serious wear on some components or unless somebody's been wrenching around under the hood your motor shouldn't ever be out of time, that's not really a maintenance check, like i said unless a component is worn badely, t/b or t/b tensioner, but say you had the t/b off, as far as timing it you would have to match marks on cams, and crank, as well as marking #1 at tdc. and if dist. was removed it's time to get the timing light out
