Default 170 and 171 codes in my 98 civic lx

My scan tool is giving me those codes which represent Fuel Trim Malfunction and Lean Condition. I have been getting the lean condiditon for sometime and I retarded my timing back to normal thinking because I haven't upgraded my fuel system yet the injectors couldn't keep up with the slight advance but it came back and this time bringing the fuel trim code with it. any help with this one? What is the common cause of fuel trim malfunction? O2 sensor, other sensor, fuel hardware?

Could be any number of things. When was the last time you had your fuel filter changed?

Default haven't lately

I haven't changed it lately I was planning on testing the fuel pressure at the rail to start and then move on from there but I suppose I should just replace it any way.
