Default Breaking in a Type S...

Hey guys my girl is picking up her new Type S Monday afternoon... I've heard that you need to break in any Vtech engine. Is this true? The most common guideline I hear is shift below 5k for 5,000 miles... any comments would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

VTECH is a phone dumbass!!! VTEC is the proper spelling.

Just kidding man, seriously, thats way cool Jen is getting a Type-S bro.

just don't beat on the engine for the first 3000 miles and no going above 3500 RPM. Drive sedately and baby the thing. make sure the oil is real/natural for the first few thousand miles, then go to a synthetic lube like mobil 1, then you should be good bro.

Edit: well thats what you'd do after a build, the RSX motor might not need that kinda of detail...

whoa there engine break in is just that a break in. you only need to take it easy for the first 1000 miles and then slowly bring in the vtec factor. most people on clubrsx including me were redlining by 1500 miles.

I redlined right off the dealer lot. Done it with every new car I have owned, if it's going to break that's when it will break.

Break it while its still under warranty because they usually do break right after the warranty runs out :-)

Thanks everyone. Yeah the salesman at the dealer looked it up in the new owners manual and it doesn't specifically state what RPM's for x amount of miles but it does say NO extremely fast pickups, and not to drop the clutch from a higher RPM. Basically things anyone with any logical sense would think. So for now Jen's shifting under 5k but it prob won't last long cause I want to hear that puppy. Jon: thanks for the edit I don't know what I was thinking, but YOU know that I know the difference. Thanks again everybody....peace.

Don't use the cruise control for the first 1000 miles, no steady engine speeds, keep RPM low, really below VTEC engagement, easy does it off the line, easy on the brakes, change the oil at 1000-1500 miles, stay with dyno oil for first few oil changes then go to synthetic. Switch to Redline tranny fluid at 30,000 and ditch those shitty tires just as fast as you can, the thing will be transformed by decent tires. I remember very clearly the first time I saw 90 mph in third gear, ain't nothin like it

Hmm..when my best friend picked up his 03 RSX-s the sales lady told him to drive his new RSX-s like he did any other car. But not to use cruse control for 500-1000 miles. She said there was no "break in" period. Hell they dont even suggest you put synthetic oil in till at least 10k, and you dont change the oil for 5k. I think that in and of itself says a lot about the engine. Just beat on it like you would other wise.

Yeah, that's the way I have broken in Hondas/Acuras since we bought our first new one in 1982. We have had a couple for 100000 miles + of trouble free driving. Also we stick pretty much to the recommendations in the owner's manual for all the services, including oil changes. Only thing the cars go back to the dealer for are warranty claims, all other service work is performed by the mechanics at a garage we have been using for the last 12 + years.
