B20vtec vs. B18c1

Default B20vtec vs. B18c1

For some time lately I've been finding a little bit more interest in these B20 vtecs (prices???). Now what I have been set on and saving up for has been the B18c1 but lately I keep reading more and more good stuff about this engine....For those that have a broad knowledge of these two engines, (say there both fully built with pistons, rods, turbo cams, valves, port and polish, and of course the T3/T4 turbo,...etc..) which one pound for pound is going to be better? Oh and another question I cant find is which head would you put on the B20?

If your definition of "fully built" includes new sleeves, I would go with the B18C1, hands down. You can take a B18C1, sleeve it to 84mm, put an LS crank and LS rods in it, and you'll have the displacement of a B20, plus VTEC with OEM block girdle, VTEC oiling components, and OEM reliability. A B18C1 resleeved to 84mm would also be a lot stronger than stock B20 sleeves. If you're trying to boost on stock B20 sleeves, you can't run all that much boost before structural integrity becomes an issue. The B20 sleeves are one-piece and at a glance would seem more sturdy than the induvidual B18 sleeves, but the areas between the cylinders on the B20 sleeves are the weak points. This would lead one to conclude that, in order to run anything beyond moderate boost on a B20 block, it is necessary to have it resleeved. If you're going to be getting new sleeves anyway, why not just sleeve a B18C1 to 84mm and have all the VTEC components as they came from the factory, rather than trying to add them to a B20 block.

wow you really do know your shyt man. thats one reason why i came here to learn more. wouldnt building up a b20vtec anyway be more of a hassle and more money than just building up a b18c1 seeing as they can make good power anyway

If you're not going to resleeve, and you're building an N/A B20/VTEC, then you could probably do it for less than a resleeved B18C with an LS crank and rods. However, most people don't take the time to build them the right way. By that, I mean they usually just take a B20 block, and slap a VTEC head on it and call it a day. Built as such, a B20/VTEC will not hve a very high level of reliability. It won't be able to rev as high as a B18C, nor will it be able to do so safely. People don't take the time to install VTEC oiling components, and they often try to install a block girdle by simply bolting it up, which does more harm than good. To properly install a block girdle, you need to machine dowels in place. It's a fairly involved process, so it's just a lot easier to start with a B18C block and swap out the crank. If you're building for boost, then a resleeve is oretty much required, so why not just resleeve a B18C and have the OEM VTEC components already there.
