what do you guys think about guns with biometric thechnology?
There are a lot of pro and anti-gun individuals on this forum but what if there was a way to control exactly who can use a gun? Would that change your opinion?
I think that biometric & other electronic methods (such as a chip in the gun that has to in certain proximity to a chip in your watch to fire) are a great idea, but they need to be absolutely foolproof before widespread deployment. It's a great idea for cops especially, who have an alarmingly high chance of their own firearm being used against them.
It also protects the civilian gun owner, as a stolen firearm would be largely worthless. Though I'm sure a smart enough thief could disable any electronic lockout given enough time.

sure a good idea, but given enough time it will be circumvented. i see it's usefulness, but i also see how its going to make the industry costs skyrocket and in due time criminals will have a way around it.
in the end it still doesnt do any good because, say you want to sell a gun. somehow you have to be able to wipe the scanner and reprogram / add id's. wont take criminals long and they will either have the software themselves or develop their own version to wipe guns memories.
neat idea but one that ultimately is just another waste of money

Of course you can't stop everything but this is good start.

great response
how so?
in immediate circumstances and child related instances it will be a positive. but long term prevention of gun violence its near useless. biometrics are beatable and you cant take something like guns and make them forever linked to one person. people buy and sell them on a regular basis, there will be software to alter the guns id recognition and that software will make its way into the hands of criminals there are no doubts about that. someone will see the profit in hacking gun biometric systems and do it and that will place unlawful usable guns right back into the hands of criminals.
the only place i see this as useful is in homes of small children or in cases where the criminal entering your home knows where your guns are and in both cases if you arent properly securing your weapons in the first place then you dont belong owning them. regardless if the gun has biometrics or not it doesnt belong being in reach of a child who knows no better. they are only a stopgate in immediate circumstances like home defense and child safety
