Default Those with Media Servers

What OS do you use? Also how is yours setup? Explain to me this Gigabit ethernet thing? I'm getting Windows 2k8 server and i plan on using my current PC as a media server setup in a closet and making a new media PC that's more Entertainment center friendly.

not much to explain about gigabit ethernet. it's just 1000 mbps instead of 100 mbps. the only way to take advantage of it is if all your equipment is gigE. (ie. switch, nics)

That's what i was thinking. I could basically use regular cat5 correct and get a gigabit router (if they make those)

No you need Cat6 compliant if you are going with a wired system.

your router is not going to matter cuz you dont have a gigabit connection to the internet.

So for the setup i'm looking for. Is it better to Have it ran like this....

Modem > Router > Switch > Each individual unit

I'm still trying to learn servers and stuff like that. Sorry if this is really remedial.
